Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are a product of internet technology and allow an organization to run a private and secure network restricted only to its authorized locations and personnel while using the versatile and low cost internet technology framework.

VPNs involve both hardware and software components and emphasise strongly on security and intrusion prevention.

With a VPN an enterprise can have its entire global operation integrated into a single network, working effectively as a local area network but connected across locations through internet protocols.

The VPN can be configured to allow only restricted and selective access to external internet and web areas to employees of the enterprise who are using the VPN.

The VPN also restricts and blocks outside users from accessing the secure contents of the enterprise's systems and databases.

The VPN through its framework provides a very secure solution and a combination of hardware and software is used to enable this result.

With a VPN an enterprise can run email, business applications, intranets, data transfers and document management systems across locations. Servers and databases can be accessed and individual computers can be linked for shared use and access through the VPN providing complete flexibility and ease of use within the users of the network.

At the same time, the VPN will ensure that any location or computer that is not authorized for access to the VPN is blocked at the outermost layer of access to provide high security and intrusion prevention.

Intrusion detection hardware and software, firewalls, packet monitoring, filters, anti-virus measures, spam protection devices and others form components of a comprehensive VPN system.
