Product Lifecycle Management

Product Lifecycle Management of PLM has evolved from the earlier Product Data Management (PDM) systems. Focussed on the design-engineering function in PDM, PLM now looks at the larger aspect of managing products and services and extends to the entire organization.

PLM involves looking a product and managing its evolution and growth over time. It concerns itself with documentation and maintenance of detailed records of products, their revisions, feedback and performance reports, impact of technological advances, specifications and strategic directions of these products.

PLM systems have large databases that store detailed information on products and their documents and enable extensive search and browing through this data. The design-engineering function is core to the use of PLM but other functions also contribute and are integrated into PLM including manufacturing, production, quality, research and development, marketing and customer service.
