e-Commerce

e-Commerce began to grow in the late nineties thanks to the growth of the internet and the dotcom revolution. The bust of the dotcoms put the brakes on e-commerce and there were concerns about security and ability of e-commerce to substitute the real world experience.

e-Commerce is however on its revival now and each year-end sees a new high in online retailing sales. This year is expected to be no different.

Amazon and eBay have been making profits from online retailing and have carved a niche for themselves in the overall retailing business. Most traditional retailers now have an online division that complements their network of stores.

Besides consumer e-Commerce there is also industrial e-commerce that is gaining prominence and credibility. A number of business enterprises have been enabling their channels with e-commerce interfaces that facilitate online catalogs, online ordering and tracking of orders and viewing of account balances and scheduled payments.

e-procurement and auctions are also being conducted by enterprises to drive down procurement transaction costs and bring in better pricing through increased competition and global vendor participation.

B2B Exchanges most of which either shut down or merged with other organizations after the dotcom meltdown are now either coming back or new operations are being promoted, a number of these either by traditional giants in their industries or alliances of companies in the same business. It is expected that B2B exchanges will soon begin to make sense for businesses and will gently emerge as a strong contender of mindspace in most business operations.

A large component of technical operations in e-commerce operations relate to integration with internal systems, exchange of data between suppliers, creation of standards for products and services, catalogs and order information and security and protection of vendors and buyers in confidential and high value transactions. e-Commerce technology models still have a long way to mature and become more versatile and advanced.
